Good tax research during CA articleship starts with a precise question, verified facts and the correct source for the relevant period. A useful research note explains what is known, what remains uncertain and what a supervisor needs to review. Collecting many links is only the beginning.

If you are interested in tax work at PGT & Associates in Ahmedabad, this guide shows how to practise research and drafting before or during supervised training. It is a learning framework, not advice on a taxpayer's case or a promise of a particular assignment.

Turn a broad query into an answerable question

“Find the GST rule” is too broad. First identify the transaction, relevant period, parties, documents and specific uncertainty. Ask the person assigning the task what decision the research is meant to support.

Create a short fact sheet. Separate confirmed facts from assumptions and missing records. For a notice-related task, a supervisor should review the actual notice, relevant dates and procedural requirements before anyone relies on a general internet summary.

Do not calculate a filing deadline or recommend a response merely from a screenshot. Missing pages, later communications and case-specific circumstances can change the analysis.

Build a source trail that another reviewer can follow

Use commentary to identify a question, then open the underlying official material. Record the source title, document number, issuing authority, date, relevant passage and URL. Save the permitted source copy in the approved workspace so your reasoning remains traceable.

The Income Tax Department portal and the Supreme Court of India website are examples of official starting points. They serve different purposes; a portal notice, a legal provision and a court judgment should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

For state-specific issues, identify the relevant state authority or court rather than assuming a central source answers every question.

Check dates, scope and later developments

A document can be authentic and still be the wrong one for the task. Compare its scope with the facts before using it.

  • Identify the relevant financial year, assessment year or tax year, as applicable.

  • Check the legislation and version that govern the period.

  • Read the commencement or effective-date wording.

  • Distinguish proposals, recommendations and drafts from operative legal instruments.

  • Check for later amendments, clarifications, orders or relevant judicial developments.

  • Ask the reviewer to assess territorial reach and the authority of any cited decision.

This checklist is especially useful when older material remains prominent in search results. Never assume that the newest article describes the law applicable to an earlier transaction.

Use a concise research-note structure

A clear first draft helps a supervisor review your thinking without reconstructing the whole search. An effective practice format has six parts:

  • Question: the precise issue assigned.

  • Facts: confirmed information, assumptions and missing records.

  • Sources: primary documents with specific references.

  • Analysis: how the material relates to the facts, including contrary points.

  • Provisional conclusion: what the research supports and its limitations.

  • Review questions: issues requiring the supervisor's decision.

Label a draft as a draft. Keep tentative observations separate from approved advice. A short note with clearly identified uncertainty is more useful than a confident conclusion that omits a conflicting source.

Practise drafting with a fictional document request

For a safe beginner exercise, write an internal note about a fictional mismatch between a ledger and a statement. Do not invent a legal conclusion. Identify the documents required to understand the difference.

A concise request might seek the relevant ledger extract, statement, supporting invoices and reconciliation explanation for a stated period. Explain why each item is needed and list outstanding questions. Avoid vague requests for “all documents” or accusatory wording.

Review tone, references and numbers before sending the draft to a supervisor. On real assignments, external communications, submissions and advice must follow the firm's approval process and applicable authority requirements.

Why consider PGT & Associates for tax-oriented articleship?

PGT's published team profile identifies direct and indirect taxation, tax litigation and drafting among the practice's areas of work. This gives candidates a concrete basis for enquiring about supervised research opportunities.

Ask which teams are accepting trainees, what work is suitable for your stage and how drafts are reviewed. Actual assignments depend on the role and current requirements. This post does not promise court appearances, independent client advice or a guaranteed litigation rotation.

Use AI carefully during research preparation

An AI-generated answer can suggest issues to investigate, but it cannot replace reading the source. Open every cited document, check the quotation in context and confirm the applicable period. If a citation cannot be found, do not include it as authority.

Do not put client records, tax identifiers, notices or confidential facts into an unapproved tool. Use fictional practice material and follow the firm's approved information-handling process. The person reviewing the work needs evidence, not an unsupported claim that a tool verified it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need litigation experience before making an enquiry?

Describe your actual experience honestly. A well-organised fictional research note can demonstrate interest and care, but PGT must confirm the requirements of any current opportunity.

Can an article assistant issue an independent tax opinion?

Do not treat a trainee research note as approved advice. The appropriate professional must review the analysis, authority and communication process for the actual engagement.

How can I apply to PGT in Ahmedabad?

Email pgtulsian@gmail.com with your CV, examination status, proposed joining date and interest in tax research or drafting. Candidates pursuing CMA should identify their qualification separately and verify recognition of the proposed training arrangement under current ICMAI requirements.
