Direct answer: For FY 2025-26 / AY 2026-27, the tax audit report continues to be filed under the Income-tax Act, 1961 in Form 3CA or Form 3CB together with Form 3CD. The ordinary tax-audit report due date is 30 September 2026. A transfer-pricing case generally has the audit-report timeline shifted to 31 October 2026. The new unified Form 26 applies to Tax Year 2026-27, not AY 2026-27.

AY 2026-27 tax audit: the transition point professionals must not miss

The Income Tax Act, 2025 came into force from 1 April 2026, but that date does not convert FY 2025-26 tax audits into the new-law Form 26 framework. The Income Tax Department has expressly clarified that the audit report for FY 2025-26 relates to AY 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act, 1961 and must use the existing Form 3CA/3CB/3CD architecture even though filing occurs after 1 April 2026.

Form 3CA, Form 3CB and Form 3CD: which one applies?

Form 3CA is the audit report where the assessee’s accounts are already required to be audited under another law. Form 3CB is used in other tax-audit cases. Form 3CD is not an alternative to those reports: it is the statement of prescribed particulars annexed to Form 3CA or Form 3CB. This distinction should be settled before the audit file is built, because an incorrect form selection creates avoidable filing and documentation risk.

The 30 September 2026 deadline

For the ordinary AY 2026-27 tax-audit case, the Department confirms 30 September 2026 as the due date for furnishing the tax audit report. This sits one month before the usual 31 October 2026 return deadline for an assessee required to get accounts audited. In a transfer-pricing case where the return due date is 30 November 2026, the tax-audit report timeline is generally 31 October 2026.

What should be ready before September?

A tax-audit file should not begin with Form 3CD data entry. It should begin with reconciliations. At minimum, management and the auditor should close turnover and GST reconciliation; TDS/TCS ledgers and returns; MSME creditor ageing for section 43B(h); PF/ESI employee-contribution due dates; fixed-asset additions, disposals and put-to-use evidence; related-party payments; cash-loan, deposit and repayment testing; brought-forward losses; SFT reporting; and the final bridge between Form 3CD adjustments and the income-tax return.

A practical AY 2026-27 readiness sequence

1. Confirm section 44AB applicability and the correct clause under which audit is triggered. 2. Decide Form 3CA versus Form 3CB. 3. Freeze the trial balance and audited/statutory financial statements where applicable. 4. Reconcile turnover with GST returns and other reporting systems. 5. Build clause-wise Form 3CD working papers with documentary support. 6. Resolve management representations and qualifications early. 7. Cross-check Form 3CD adjustments against the draft ITR. 8. Complete UDIN and e-filing workflow sufficiently before the statutory deadline rather than treating 30 September as the working-paper completion date.

Example: statutory audit company

Assume an Indian company has a 31 March 2026 year-end and is already subject to statutory audit under the Companies Act. If section 44AB applies, the tax-audit report is ordinarily Form 3CA with Form 3CD. The fact that the report is uploaded after 1 April 2026 does not move it to Form 26. For an ordinary audited return case, the tax-audit report should be furnished by 30 September 2026 and the return is generally due by 31 October 2026.

Why the Form 26 confusion matters

The Department has separately clarified that Form 26 is the unified tax-audit form for Tax Year 2026-27 under the Income Tax Act, 2025, with the corresponding tax-audit due date falling on 30 September 2027. Professionals therefore need two compliance calendars during the transition: AY 2026-27 under the 1961 Act and Tax Year 2026-27 under the 2025 Act.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not use Form 26 for FY 2025-26 merely because the upload happens after 1 April 2026. Do not treat Form 3CD as a standalone audit report. Do not wait for the final week of September to discover GST, TDS, MSME or fixed-asset reconciliation gaps. Do not allow the draft ITR and Form 3CD to develop independently where the return schedules directly depend on audit-report disclosures.

Frequently asked questions

Is Form 3CD applicable for AY 2026-27? Yes, where section 44AB applies, Form 3CD continues as the statement of particulars with Form 3CA or 3CB. Is the ordinary due date 30 September 2026? Yes, for the ordinary audited case. Does Form 26 replace Form 3CD for AY 2026-27? No. Form 26 belongs to Tax Year 2026-27 under the Income Tax Act, 2025. Can the tax audit report be prepared after the ITR? Operationally, the audit report should be completed first because its disclosures and adjustments feed the return and the statutory report deadline precedes the ordinary audited-return deadline.

Professional takeaway

AY 2026-27 is a transition year in legislation, not a transition year in the tax-audit form used for FY 2025-26. The highest-value control is a disciplined September close: establish applicability, choose the correct report form, complete clause-wise reconciliations, align Form 3CD with the ITR, and leave enough time for review and electronic filing.
