October 2026 GST return deadlines: what taxpayers should know

Businesses should review their GST filing frequency and principal place of business before filing September 2026 returns. The ordinary October deadlines are different for monthly filers and taxpayers using the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme.

Key upcoming GSTR-3B deadlines

20 October 2026: GSTR-3B for September 2026 for regular monthly filers.

22 October 2026: GSTR-3B for July–September 2026 for eligible QRMP taxpayers in the applicable state and Union Territory group.

24 October 2026: GSTR-3B for July–September 2026 for eligible QRMP taxpayers in the other state and Union Territory group.

For a QRMP taxpayer, the applicable date depends on the principal place of business of the GST registration. A Gujarat GSTIN is ordinarily in the 22 October group under the standard schedule, but each taxpayer should verify the date on the GST Portal and check whether any later notification has extended it.

GSTR-1 dates to keep in mind

The ordinary GSTR-1 due date is the 11th day of the succeeding month for monthly filers and the 13th day of the month succeeding the quarter for quarterly filers. Therefore, the September 2026 monthly GSTR-1 deadline is ordinarily 11 October 2026, while the July–September 2026 quarterly GSTR-1 deadline is ordinarily 13 October 2026. If these dates have passed, check the GST Portal immediately for filing status, late fees and any applicable relief.

Pre-filing checklist

Before submitting GSTR-3B, reconcile outward supplies and amendments, compare eligible input tax credit with GSTR-2B and the purchase register, review reverse-charge liabilities, check earlier-period adjustments and verify the electronic cash and credit ledgers. Save the filed return, ARN, challans and reconciliation working papers.

QRMP is a quarterly return scheme with monthly payment. Do not assume that quarterly filing removes all monthly payment or record-keeping requirements. Confirm the taxpayer’s actual option and filing frequency for each GSTIN.

Practice guide for professionals

For a table-by-table working reference on the annual return and reconciliation statement, see the GSTR-9 & GSTR-9C Practical Working Guide (PDF, ₹299).

Important caution

The dates above are ordinary statutory dates based on the standard GSTN rules. Government notifications, taxpayer category, state-specific treatment or portal notices may change a deadline. Always verify the final due date and filing status on the official GST Portal before relying on this calendar.
