Foreign Assets Now Visible in AIS: What Indian Taxpayers Should Check Before Filing ITR

The Income Tax Department has made an important change for taxpayers with overseas financial interests: foreign asset information received through international information-exchange frameworks such as CRS and FATCA can now be viewed through the Annual Information Statement (AIS). For taxpayers with foreign bank accounts, overseas shares, employee stock plans or other reportable interests, this makes pre-filing reconciliation more important than ever.
Why this matters before filing your ITR
Foreign assets and foreign-source income have separate disclosure requirements in the income-tax return. AIS visibility does not replace the taxpayer’s responsibility to determine the correct reporting position. Instead, it gives taxpayers another data point to compare against their own records before the return is filed.
What should you reconcile?
Review overseas bank and custodial accounts, foreign shares and securities, foreign retirement or investment accounts, employee stock plans, foreign-source interest or dividends and any other overseas financial interest relevant to your return. Check ownership, values, income earned and the period for which disclosure is required instead of simply copying figures from AIS.
Do not ignore a mismatch
A difference between AIS and your records does not automatically mean your return is wrong. The information may need classification, conversion or further verification. But unexplained differences should be investigated before filing because foreign-asset reporting can attract greater scrutiny than an ordinary domestic mismatch.
Practical filing approach
Download or review your AIS, identify all foreign-asset entries, reconcile them with bank, broker and employer statements, determine the applicable schedules in your ITR and retain supporting documents. Where the ownership structure or tax treatment is unclear, obtain professional advice before filing rather than correcting the position after a notice.
PGT & Associates assists taxpayers with ITR review, foreign-asset disclosures and reconciliation of AIS information. The appropriate reporting depends on the taxpayer’s residential status, nature of the asset and facts of the case.
